Teaching objectives
At the end of the training, the participant will be able to:
  • Understand the concepts and tools of an Occupational Health & Safety Management System (OHSMS)
  • Prepare and launch the audit approach using the different conditions and requirements of the ISO 45001 standard.
  • Manage the various steps of an audit and communicating the relevant aspects of the approach
  • Draw conclusions from an audit and explain them to management
  • Set up monitoring using the assessment of corrective action plans
  • Take the “Certified ISO 45001 Lead Auditor” exam

Intended audience
Internal and external auditors who want to conduct and lead OHSMS certification audits, project managers or consultants who want to master the auditing process, OHSMS managers.

Prerequisites
ISO 45001 Foundation certification or basic knowledge of the ISO 45001 standard is recommended.

Course schedule

Introduction to the OHSMS and the ISO 45001 standard

  • Situating the ISO 45001 standard within the normative and regulatory framework of occupational health and safety.
  • Describing the ISO 45001 certification process.
  • Fundamental principles of occupational health and safety (OH&S).
  • OHSMS clauses and all requirements of the ISO 45001 standard.
Hands-on work
Case study on identifying OH&S risks for a company.

Audit principles, preparation, and triggering

  • Principles and fundamental concepts of auditing.
  • Explaining types of evidence and the evidence-based approach to auditing and risk, as well as materiality.
  • Triggering, planning, and initiating an audit.
  • Conducting a OHSMS document audit (step 1).
  • Preparing for the audit on-site (step 2).
Hands-on work
Writing exercise on ethics and responses to different suggested cases. Goal-formalizing exercise for steps 1 and 2 of the audit.

On-site auditing activities

  • Communicating during the audit.
  • Following audit procedures.
  • Writing audit testing plans.
  • Writing audit findings and non-compliance reports.
Hands-on work
Role-playing an opening meeting, an interview with the company’s management, an interview with its staff.

Ending the audit

  • Managing the audit’s documentation and reviewing the audit’s quality.
  • Evaluating the action plans as an auditor.
  • Describing the steps to take after the initial audit.
  • Incorporating the management of an internal audit program.
  • Identifying and assessing auditors’ skills.
Hands-on work
Role-playing discussions about the audit’s preliminary findings with management, leading the closing meeting, and assessing corrective actions.

Certification exam

  • Overview of the certification process.
  • Domains 1 and 2: Fundamental concepts and principles of Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems.
  • Domain 3: Principles and fundamental concepts of auditing.
  • Domains 4 and 5: Preparing and carrying out an ISO 45001 audit.
  • Domain 6: Closing an ISO 45001 audit.
  • Domain 7: Management of an ISO 45001 audit program.
Certificate
Taking the three-hour “Certified ISO 45001 Lead Auditor” exam.


Certification
After passing the exam, the participants can request recognition as “Certified ISO 45001 Provisional Auditor”, “Certified ISO 45001 Auditor” or “Certified ISO 45001 Lead Auditor” depending on their level of experience.
